Hotel Astoria — Stresa

The Hotel Astoria is right across from the Lago Maggiore lake front and less than a 5 minute walk to the old town center. The front desk staff and porters were service-oriented, friendly, and good sources of local information. By the way, there is a marvelous street market just behind the old town on Fridays until about 12.30, where you can buy local […] meats, cheese, and produce, plus other non-food items like clothing and leather goods. After reading the complaints about other clients had left about the hotel breakfast, I was prepared for the worst, but was pleasantly surprised, especially about the fruit. While it is true that the mixed fruit came from a can, there were some fresh strawberries and kiwis mixed into it, and there were also whole fresh apples, pears, bananas, and oranges in a different part of the dining room. The rest of the breakfast was standard -- a bit of sliced cheese, meat, scrambled eggs, and various types of bread, plus the usual choice of juices, coffee and tea. The only complaint we had was the bed -- the mattress was thin and of poor quality on top of a hard frame, so a bit like sleeping on a cushion on the floor. The decor was a bit dated, but there were plenty of spaces for storing clothes. There was a balcony with 2 chairs and a small table facing the garden area, which was pleasant enough. The bathroom was a pleasant surprise, being quite large and modern, with a tub/shower, large sink/counter, toilet, and bidet, plus a substantial window that opened. All in all, it was a positive experiences, but it would have been so much better had I slept well. We didn't use them, but there was a nice pool behind the hotel and a jacuzzi on the roof. Excellent location the view from the hotel fantastic ,from out side the hotel looks nice, breakfast lounge over looks the beautiful lake ,when we checked in the receptionist was not friendly at all, first he checked us in the first floor in a very gloomy room ,we protested that , and wear told that the hotel is full , my wife refused to stay in the […] hotel ,then the old receptionist asked some one to show us one of the four vacant rooms on the third floor!!! , the bath room needed renovation ,the smallest tv set belongs to a muesium ,breafast very poor , canned fruit , eggs scrambled cooked badly, the Young night receptionist was extremely nice and very helpful , but we will not go back to that hotel again as we travel a lot ,five times a year . We were very impressed as we drove up to this hotel- beautiful floral displays and fountains in the gardens. However we were soon to have our first impression dashed as we were shown to our room Number 501. The room was extremely shabby and smelt as if something dead was rotting in a corner somewhere. We approached reception and the unhelpful staff […] were dismissive and said the hotel was full so they couldn't deal with our problem until the following day. The next day we were able to move to a room which was very satisfactory. We couldn't believe that a four star hotel is using rooms that are badly in need of refurbishment. The management were unsympathetic and said that the room we had been given was an upgrade on the annex room that we had booked. Goodness knows what those rooms were like if they were worse than room 501. On a positive note -the diningroom staff and the porter were all very pleasant and helpful. Uzziniet vairāk

We stayed in the annex and other than the air conditioner not working, we enjoyed our stay. Walking distance to town. Breakfast plentiful. Front desk very helpful and friendly. Most of the staff can converse in English, German and French. Would recommend staying here.

Our experience at this hotel was nothing but positive. Exellent location with a great view of the lake and close to the square and the gondola lift.

This was our third visit to the Hotel Astoria and it was a good as ever, albeit that we were in an annex room rather than one with a lake view - but as it was only for two nights that wasn't a problem.

We considered other hotels in Stresa in the same price range but decided on the Astoria because other reviewers found it to be friendly. We also found this to be the case. We are now looking foreward to our next visit to Stresa and the Astoria.

Great location, but the beds were rock hard. The shower pulsed BOILING HOT water during showers so be very careful. Could scald you. Seriously! Very mediocre continental breakfast.

My wife and I are in our late sixties. We know Italy well, having lived there, many years ago. Stresa is one of our favourite places and we have been going there for a week every other year for around 15 years. We always stay in the Astoria, in a room with a lake view and a balcony. The rooms are plenty large enough and well furnished, and the balconies […] are excellent, secluded and comfortable. The pool is pleasant and large enough, except occasionally when there are a lot of children. Everything works well and, on the odd occasion that something has been wrong, it has been fixed very quickly. The dinners in the restaurant have been good on the rare occasions that we have eaten there but we usually prefer to eat in a more traditional Italian style in one of the small nearby restaurants in the town. Breakfast is adequate but the buffet is rather limited. We speak Italian fluently but most of the hotel staff seem to speak adequate English, French and German. We go by car and the hotel parking is a bit limited but we've never been unable to find a space. Uzziniet vairāk

Localisation idéale, proche centre ville et embarcadère pour les iles Borrommées. Points négatifs: mauvaise insonorisation, petit déjeuner moyen (salade de fruits en conserve), salle de bain trés vieillotte, TV miniscule.

Un belissimo hotel, molto confortabile, com tutti le cose funzionando bene (internet access include). Stresa è una citta belissima e lo hotel è un bene posizionato con una vista del mare o delle montagne.

Wir hatten ein "Deluxe"-Doppelzimmer gebucht und bezahlt, erhielten aber nur ein Standardzimmer. Nach Beschwerde unsererseits wurde uns ein Komfortzimmer angeboten, jedoch nur gegen Aufpreis. Als "besonderes Entgegenkommen" wurde der Aufpreis von 60 auf 20 Euro pro Tag reduziert. Wir bemängeln die Diskrepanz zwischen gebuchter und erhaltener Zimmer […] kategorie. Uzziniet vairāk

Nous sommes trés satisfait dans l'ensemble et convient bien pour un séjour prolongé. Il est préférable de séjourner ici et visiter les lacs environnants, que le contraire.

Das Hotel liegt gut für die Benützung der Vaporettos auf die Inseln. Lärmige Lage, da die Strasse direkt am Hotel vorbeiführt. Die Zimmer sind klein und eher verstaubt. Der Frühstückservice bietet nichts Besonderes. Der Fruchtsalat kommt aus der Büchse. Preis Leistung stimmt nicht, wird jedoch, dank der günstigen Lage akzeptiert.

Gutes Hotel, Morgenessen könnte mit frischen Früchten usw. etwas reicher ausfallen (für diese Preisklasse) Zimmer mit Balkon, auch seitlich angebracht, haben wunderschöne Seesicht und sind grosszügig bemessen, kommen wieder!

Nice and tidy, very beautifull area, rather small room, free parking space, nice swimmingpool. But there are 2 drawbacks : 1 : if somebody on a higher floor takes a bath you can hear the sensation of the Niagara falls and if the plug is pulled you get the thrill of the breaking of Hoover dam. 2 : internet through Swisscom costs 22€ / day or 10€ / hour […] !
