The Citizen Hotel, a Joie de Vivre Boutique Hotel — Sacramento

This was our 2nd stay at The Citizen Hotel, and both times have been great! We look for any excuse to stay at this hotel.

that being said it does not have a pool or any of that vacation stuff. It does have a great ($$) restaurant and wonderful hotel service. The building feels like it's older and the hotel made use of the quirky old designs and incorporated newer decorations that feel like they belong. All in all I felt like I had a very positive experience at this hotel and I would definitely return next year for my annual trip to the Capitol. I felt it was a much better value, more personal and special than the hotel that all of my colleagues stayed at down the block at twice the cost of my hotel! They were all very jealous and wanted to come stay […] in my "suite" and hang in the very cool bar/lounge in the downstairs lobby. I had some "special needs" during my stay that were attended to immediately by the front desk. Only downsides at all of my stay were: (1) night club across the street was very loud until 3:00a.m. including police to break up "incidences" and then was awoken again at 5:30 a.m. when several fire trucks arrived and blocked off the street with the bar's alarm going off and much mayhem about a potential fire after they had closed...not a good night's sleep that night :( and (2) when I inquired about security during the night if needed it (due to a totally different situation) I was told that the valet doubles as security and the manager is "on call" if he needs to come to the hotel for security purposes (not real comforting) and (3) I found it inconvenient that room service was only available for breakfast and dinner and not at any other time in the hotel- especially when I was checking in at 2:00 in the afternoon starving and there is no where to get lunch or any food in the hotel until the bar and room service opened again at 5:30 :( But even with these named inconveniences, I would definitely return to this hotel as I feel that they are trying hard to provide excellent service and am sure that they will take these suggestions into consideration to continue improving the satisfaction of their patrons. Great historic hotel with all the boutique hotel bells and whistles....love the "political" edge to the decor! Grange restaurant and bar definitely caters to the out of towner needs to entertain or sit at the bar solo. Breakfast at Grange was a great start to the business day too. Hotel staff attentive and accommodating with all needs.

First time to Sacramento. The Citizen Hotel and the Grange Were the high points of our stay. Great staff, well designed and decorated room, fabulous food.

Building is old, but tastfully restored and very classy. From the valet parking to the Hotel Manager, customer service seems to be the highest priority here. I just wish there weren't so many hobos in the neighborhood.

Clean, convenient and pet friendly! Rooms are awesome! Everyone's so nice!

Great hotel; very nice quality-l;ocation is good, except our room was adjacent to a street where there must be a dance club that was very loud. If you can get a room that isn't adjacent to this street, its a fantastic hotel.

Loved that comfortable bed and huge bathroom.

In room movies was not working and no notice was given at check in. We spent a lot of time trying to make their entertainment package to work. When called downstairs we were told service carrier went out of business

My fiance and I stayed here this past weekend for his 40th bday. We unloaded all of our luggage an hauled it upstairs ourself, we were both dress up and needed to b at the next party pronto,noone came down to help, they jus gave us the trolley. I've had way better ser iced elsewhwere, I thou this was a four star hotel, and for a 1 room suite, it was […] too small. However the room decor was lovely, as well as bathroom,tub was a plus. I travel constantly & stay in a multitude of hotels. The Citizen immediately has joined my top 3 of all time - loved my room & the hotel's service was impeccable. Wish all hotels were like this

My girlfriend and I stayed here to attend the North American Handmade Bike Show last weekend. We were excited to stay in a historic building so close to the convention center. The hotel employees were extremely friendly and accommodating: we were concerned about noise from a wedding party on the 7th floor, so we asked for a different room. We not only […] got the quietest room in the hotel, but they also moved all of our stuff! (Well, they missed a toothbrush, but they happily brought it over later). Classy place! For people (like me) who love historic buildings for character but want luxurious and modern rooms and amenities. Nice details, right down to the plush towels. Fun political theme with the artwork. Great relaxed and personal service. Hotel restaurant, The Grange, was excellent too.

Spend two nights here with family. The location is great - within walking distance of pretty much anything you would want to see or do in the downtown area. Rooms are a bit small (it is an old building, but nicely refurbished) but well appointed. Staff are very helpful and accommodating. We had to wait about 10 minutes for our room to be ready when […] checking in and were given a $50 comp to the restaurant for the inconvenience. The Citizen was super cute and classy! We wanted a romantic night away from home, so this ended up being perfect. The room was very comfy and clean and even had a nice view of the state Capitol outside our window. We had drinks and appetizers at the restaurant downstairs before we left for dinner reservations and it was delicious. the bartenders we're […] very helpful with pairing drinks to go with our app choice. Again, VERY CLASSY! The awesomeness of this hotel I would have thought the price woukd have been at least double what we paid! Highly recommend. I didn't realize that this hotel had a political theme - I mean, it probably should have been obvious from the name but anyhow... SO it was a terrific stay. Everything was perfect, beautiful and the staff was very polite and energetic. The only downside was that the windows of our 5th-story room, while large and bright, were dirty with city grime. This is a wonderful quaint hotel in the heart of downtown Sacramento. The sushi restaurant around the corner is amazing. You will not be disappointed.

We were unfamiliar with hotels in Sacramento, but found this hotel on-line for us to stay at while visiting Sacramento recently. All I can say is Wow! Had a great stay at the Citizen. Hotel is historic and very well-maintained and upgraded. We had a king deluxe room and it was very roomy - suites must be huge. Bathroom was also plenty spacious. We were there for the marathon, so it was nice to have plenty of room to get dressed and packed up on race morning. Was a little disappointed that there wasn't […] a tub, but that was only because I was hoping to soak after the run. Wasn't really a problem. Location was perfect for getting to the capitol and the convention center and the K Street Mall area. Not much else around, so you need a car or cab fare to go see the more fun (nicer) neighborhoods. Staff were friendly, no problems there. The Grange restaurant was good, but not *that* good. The prices were steep, so I'd find somewhere else if you can. Beware the pay-by-the-day internet access charge in the rooms. They promote the in-room online system connected to the TV and it sounds really cool, but the access is $10/day. A very stylish, elegant and classic hotel with a contemporary, hip vibe. Service is outstanding. Our room was very comfortable and clean. Evidently, our room had not been used in a while because I did notice a layer of dust that had accumulated on all of the furniture. The room did not feel dirty though...just not used before the dust could gather […] again. The bathroom was clean and included an extra-large tiled shower with a really good shower head. Plush, warm robes were also on hand. Our king bed was very comfortable and the pillows and linen were of very good quality. Room, desk & valet services were efficient, professional and courteous. We enjoyed the bar service at The Grange; the bartenders were really mixologists! The hotel is an easy two-block walk to the State Capitol. My husband and I stayed here for the weekend and loved it. The staff are very friendly and make your stay comfortable. It is located in walking dist of old Sacramento and great dinning. Will stay again.

The hotel is conveniently located downtown. The staff were very friendly and helpful, every one of them every interaction. The ambience is an old school charm but the rooms had all of the modern amenities. The marble sink, striped wallpaper, actual mirrored amoire, all of it adds to the historical feel of the hotel. But the 2 flat screens, mini bar […] and ipod docker are luxuries we appreciate. The adjacent restaurant The Grange is excellent and make great cocktails. This hotel was very nice. The hotel's entrance and reception area was stunning. Our room was spacious and clean. They had the tv hooked up to the Internet so we enjoyed watching some you tube. We arrived and unfortunately discovered we had booked for the wrong night - the staff was friendly and had us changed in moments and even gave us a discount for their restaurant which turned out to be a GREAT meal!

This hotel is amazing! The staff is very professional, very helpful and treated us like we were the only guests. By the end of our stay, the bellboys practically knew our names! I highly recommend the valet parking, while it is pricy @ $25 a night, it adds to the pampering weekend. We booked a Jr Suit, which is pretty much normal hotel room size- but […] we could see the capital building through the bathroom window. The restaurant was very very very delicious, but slightly expensive, great for foodies or that special night. The only downside- during the weekend EVERYTHING is closed downtown, we tried to walk to breakfast but nothing was open (even starbucks!). After reading a lot of other reviews about the noisy club, we were expecting a loud Saturday night. I am pretty sure that the noisy club is one of the hotel's conference/ballrooms, which is on the 7th floor, and was extremely noisy from 3-11pm for a wedding reception.
