I stayed here with my girlfriend for five nights while in D.C. to visit my sister. The house is beautiful and very well maintained. I've stayed in a number of B&B's. This one was about average. Pluses include a very friendly staff, clean facility, wonderful breakfasts and a great neighborhood. Negatives would be the fact that you cannot lock your room while you're out, $20/night parking fee, and an unusual lay-out. The Inn is actually two buildings. The breakfast area, as well as […] snacks, etc, is located in an adjacent building to the rooms. You have to go out a back door, across a walkway, and into the next building (using your room key to get in each time). I had a great stay at this little B&B. The owner, staff and even the other guests were very friendly and helpful. It is very well located, near tons of good restaurants and about a 15-minute walk to the National Mall, a bit less than that to the nearest Metro. This was our first time staying at a B&B booked through hotels.com, and we lucked into a treasure. Dave and the other folks here are incredibly welcoming and friendly and really thought of everything when it comes to guest comfort (even mouthwash in every bathroom!). Even the "continental" breakfast was huge: croissants, toast, homemade granola, yogurt, […] fresh fruit, fancy coffee, and a baked casserole every morning. Weekend breakfasts went all out: pancakes, eggs, sausage -- all home-cooked and delicious! The location is less than half a mile from the U Street/Cardozo metro stop, and is a really nice townhome neighborhood. We felt safe and at ease. We stayed in the "economy" room, which was rather tight, but still had a double bed and wardrobe. The only thing that I can think might make other travelers uncomfortable is that our room didn't appear to have a lock on the door that you could lock when you left. (There was a sliding lock you could lock when you were inside.) There's an in-room safe for valuables, so we didn't mind too much, but that could worry some guests. However, the house itself is locked all the time, and security didn't seem to be a problem. Upon arrival at the B and B, about 8:30pm, we had no one to greet us or assist us with checking in or finding our room. We had to climb two flights of steep stairs, there was no elevator. The railing of the staircase was loose, which felt unsecured. There was no way to lock our room when we were gone. The lock on the (shared) bathroom door did not work. […] There were numerous rules posted throughout the house, which felt uncomfortable. The family pet was friendly. The breakfast was plentiful. This is my nth time staying at the William Lewis house. If you don't like antiques and dogs, this is not for you. The dog Maddy is very happy to see you when you arrive. She likes to play tug and get petted, but will go lie down on her bed if you ignore her. Some of the best things about the WLH are: free wine and snacks (in the form of trail-mix-like […] stuff, with m&ms and mixed nuts) in the evenings, a lot of big comfy furniture, a hot tub, the dog (I like dogs!), the antiques in the rooms, the free espresso (and it is good espresso!) at any time of the day or night, and the warm, homemade strudel-like stuff in the morning. The worst things (I don't consider these necessarily bad things) are that if you are worried about locking your room, there is no way to do that, but there are security safes in all of the rooms; the bathrooms are shared; the stairs are creaky. I don't usually take the time to leave online reviews but this place was great: the location, the room, the staff, the breakfast, the cost. You were made to feel like a friend visiting but not in an overbearing sort of way. The neighborhood felt safe and has a lot of restaurants, jazz places, bars. The William LewisHouse is marketed as a gay B&B, but we did not feel uncomfortable there (as a married couple). We were greeted by what we thought at the time was an unfriendly innkeeper since he didn't even welcome us (we soon determined that he was a deafmute). We were shown where all the amenities were---water, computer, food and were escorted to […] our room. That evening, we were able to meet David, the owner, and share wine and conversation. On weekends, they cook a full breakfast and we had fun meeting other guests. The house dog is also very welcoming. Yes, the updated and clean bathrooms are shared but we never experienced a problem because we were the only guests on the third floor. Others who stayed here complained about the fact the doors do not lock so the owner has installed hotel-type safes in each closet. The stairs are creaky, but that is typical of old Victorian homes. The B&B was within walking distance of both the "U" St. Metro Station and the Dupont Circle Metro. The beds were very comfortable, but our room (35) could have used a fresh coat of paint and the bedside lighting was abysmal (40 watts do not emit sufficient light for reading). Enjoyable. I would go back. Service was friendly. Continental breakfast was good with a variety of choices. Rooms and bathroom were clean. I did not know going in that there is a dog. I enjoy dogs and don't have any allergies so this was a nice surprise but this should be mentioned in the description of the B&B when booking.

We loved to stay at the Williams House and highly recommend it to everyone, who likes to meet other people and socialize. The house and amenities itself are charming and lovingly decorated. Our room was the only room with a TV, as we were told. Our room was at the back at the top of a narrow staircase. The bed was old and a bit small, but the room was clean and tidy with a bathroom shared with the other room on the top floor. Breakfast was great, presenting a chance to meet the host and other guests. The neighbourhood was pleasant and handy to coffe shops and metro.

This is the best B&B I've ever stayed at. The surroundings are gorgeous, breakfast is wonderful and there is even a wine happy hour at 5:30 pm. David and his dog, Maddie, welcome you and make you feel at home. I would definitely recommend this B&B.

We wanted a cheap place to stay along the metro line as we took a bus and didn't want to have to drive around the city or rely on the bus system. This near the U street Metro make sure to get out on the side with mural of jazz players its so much easier than from the other side take the first left out of the metro walk until you hit R St and cross the […] street it a few houses down. The walk was about 5-10 minutes. When we first arrived I did smell the cat urine odor others have referred to along the bushes but never smelled it after that. Call before you go so they can tell you the pass code to get your key out of the individual lock boxes. The decor was interesting in a good way. The bathroom was on the next floor the door did not lock properly. It was a super quiet neighborhood we were both really shocked how quite it was we whispered the whole time because there was no noise even though there were 2 other rooms being used. The floors are creaky though and very slick do not wear just socks if you are not on a rug. The commons rooms were very large and nicely put together. Breakfast was amazing! it was in the next house . 1 of the owners can hear and we didn't know so when we came in we were confused for second but he was VERY nice and gave a tour set your stuff down in the common area 1st. An antique townhouse, filled with antiques. Service was great, and so was the food. The floors are noisy, especially the stairs, and the shared bath was up on the next floor, so I showered early in the evening. It's a welcoming environment, less impersonal than corporate lodging. Nice place, clean and comfortable. Only issue - room not locked when you're not inside. The HOUSE is locked all the time, so it's not really a problem, just a little uncomfortable with the room unlocked and all my stuff inside all day. I had nothing missing and my guess is the other guests are all good and trustworthy.

It is in a mixed residential and business neighborhood which appears to be undergoing rejuvenation. The owner provides an excellent breakfast, as well as snacks and drinks in the evening. This was my first B&B experience, signs and house bell not visible in the evening and they should add amenities and local information in the common areas. The owner of this b&b was very warm and welcoming. I was extremely comfortable and at home here away from my family attending a trade show. Although the web site says this is a gay oriented b&b, the clientele was mixed (straight and gay). I wouldn't hesitate to stay again.
