Budva is Montenegro’s primary destination, famous for its beaches that border the Adriatic Sea. In the summer, visitors from around the world flock to the Budva Riviera for a good dose of Vitamin D. You’ll often be spoilt for choice in Budva with so many beaches paired with wonderful landscape views.

Each of Budva’s best beaches is surrounded by beach bars, hotels and clubs that provide sun loungers, a good range of sporting and recreational facilities, as well as excellent food and drinks. To stand out from one another, some beaches have made a name for themselves with late-night parties while the more secluded beaches offer a no-frills and natural seaside experience for families to enjoy in peace. Here’s a rounded up list of the best beaches in Budva to help you decide which is right for you.

Mogren 2 Beach, located close to the Old Town, is one of the most popular beaches in Budva. During the peak summer season, this picturesque beach gets extremely crowded, though slightly less busy than its sister beach, Mogren 1.

The view of Mogren 2 is backed by rugged mountains, with transparent waters and a fine pebble-strewn coastline dotted with sun loungers. You’ll also find cafés, terraces and changing booths on site. For a change of scenery, you can swim to the right of the beach where the rocky seabed is or go snorkelling in the shallow waters where you can get a glimpse of marine life. A word of advice: swimming shoes are recommended to protect your feet from sharp rocks and sea urchins.

Jaz Beach is a shingle coastline that’s roughly a 10-minute drive west of town. It's one of the more spacious beaches in Montenegro and is popular among sunbathers and campers. One half of the beach has an onsite camping area, while the other half is a former ‘clothing-optional’ beach that stretches just below 500 metres. The beach has also played host to popular music acts, with its first concert in 2007 headlined by The Rolling Stones and subsequently Madonna. Since then, it’s gained a reputation as a beach venue for concerts and music festivals.

Surrounded by beach bars and restaurants, the main areas of Jaz Beach are crowded in the summer. If you move towards the left of the coast, you’ll most likely be able to find a quiet spot to lie on.

With a backdrop of spectacular mountain views, Becici is a sandy beach that’s around a 25-minute walk from the centre of Budva. You can go snorkelling and jet skiing in its clear blue waters. For a more thrilling experience, you can go paragliding off the mountains near the beach and get breathtaking aerial views of the Adriatic coastline.

Cafes and restaurants surround Becici Beach, and a large part of it is dotted with sun loungers. Even so, you can often walk towards quieter ends of the beach for some free space on the sand to pitch your own umbrella. The seabed is pebbly, so you might need to wear swimming shoes to have fun in the water.

To the west of Budva’s Old Town, Beach Greco is the first part of a long stretch of beach that makes up Slovenska Plaza. The beach has 2 sections – one has sun loungers for hire, and a free public access area.

Most of the crowd at Beach Greco is concentrated in the public area. If you prefer some peace and quiet, renting a sun lounger often promises a relaxing time on the beach. An adjoining restaurant and bar serves seafood, pasta, cold cuts and ice-cold beverages. The sun sets at 6.30pm here, so it’s a great idea to come in the afternoon and stay until dusk.

Old Town Beach in Budva is a small but charming stretch of sand right outside the walls of the Old Town. During the summer months, you can swim around the citadel. On a stormy winter’s day, you can sit in a cafe and watch the waves crash on both sides of the cliffs that surround the coastline.

If you start your day with a coffee and a swim in the early morning, you can often find a sun lounger on the 1st row to lounge on and enjoy the sea breezes. There are bars and restaurants around Old Town Beach, as well as an onsite freshwater shower. As night falls, the beach is usually lit by candlelight on dining tables, giving it a warm atmosphere.

Drobni Pijesak Beach is a cove with clear blue waters and a pebbly shore and is surrounded by an olive grove. While it’s a 20-minute drive from the centre of Budva, the upside to this beach is that it’s rarely crowded – even during the summer.

Beyond the olive trees is a rugged mountain that completes the beautiful contrasting landscape of mountains and sea. In May and September when it’s still sunny and not scorching hot, Drobni Pijesak Beach is a little oasis where you can enjoy some peace and quiet. Here, you can go swimming, diving or have a drink at a nearby beach bar.

Perazica Do Beach is an undiscovered gem within a 30-minute drive from Budva Old Town. It has waters as blue as a swimming pool and a beach with a mix of fine sand and gravel.

This beach is still unexplored and unspoilt by visitors so you can enjoy it in peace. Don’t let the skeleton of the abandoned resort next to it scare you off. Standard facilities like showers, toilets, changing rooms, restaurants and beach bars are available. In the summer, come before 9.30am to find a prime spot to lie on and have your morning coffee, or come in the afternoon for a swim and stay until the sun sets.

    Azzuro Beach

Come for the beach, stay for the food

While Azzuro Beach is slightly closer to Budva’s main promenade, it’s surprisingly not as popular as the other beaches to the west. This often means smaller crowds, more space and more cleanliness. During the off-peak season, around September and October, you can still enjoy sunny days and a swim in the turquoise sea.

Most people come to Azzuro Beach and its onsite bar for cocktails and the restaurant for Italian, Mediterranean, and Balkan cuisine as well as local pancakes. As the sun sets, take a seat in the bar with a drink in hand or smoke some shisha and watch the world go by.

The Red Beach takes its name from its unique shore covered with tiny reddish stones. This little piece of paradise is tucked away in the east of Old Town Budva, offering blue waters and a beach with a peachy hue for tourists looking for a different beach experience.

The beach is divided into a private area with parasols and sunbeds and a free public area. You can find a cosy bar and terrace with a pool at the back of the beach where you can enjoy the sea view in the shade. Red Beach is roughly a 50-minute drive from Budva Old Town. The beach’s facilities aren’t available during the off-season, so the best time to go there is in the summer.
